Today, we have two exceptional guns to showcase: a Colt 1911 and a S&W 1917.
These are the two sidearms of the US Army of WW I and we have great examples of each!!
Colt “MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY”
This Colt “MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY” 45acp was manufactured in 1917. The finishes appear to be original.
Grips are original, although there were several variations of such. These are the checkered wood grips with diamonds. The lanyard is still attached and intact, many of these guns are missing that piece. Magazine has the 2-tone look which appears to be from that era too, could it be original as well?
The stamp above the magazine button is the initials GHS, it is an acceptance stamp by the US Army Inspector of Ordnance Gilbert H. Stewart. Stamped “UNITED STATES PROPERTY” on the lefthand side of frame.
Smith & Wesson model 1917 “DA 45”
This Smith & Wesson model 1917 “DA 45” (Double Action 45acp) was manufactured in 1918. ALL THE NUMBERS MATCH ! Bottom of grip frame, face of cylinder AND even the inside of the RH grip panel has the serial number written in pencil which was done at the factory 107 years ago!! The finishes appear to be original. There is nice Color Case finishing on the trigger and hammer. Checkering on grips is probably not original?
Bore is EXCELLENT. This gun has its lanyard loop intact, as many of these have been removed, damaged or missing completely. The stamp on the left-hand side of frame in the top right corner, are the initials GHS, it is an acceptance stamp by the US Army Inspector of Ordnance Gilbert H. Stewart.
This gun is also stamped “UNITED STATES PROPERTY” on the underside of barrel. The bottom of grip frame is also stamped “US ARMY MODEL 1917”.
