A valid drivers license or photo ID is required to complete a background check. The background check paperwork consists of filling out a 4473 form for long guns and handgun purchases. For handgun purchases, an additional Pennsylvania Record of Sale form is required for each handgun being purchased.

These forms are provided and must be completed in store. Once you complete your information and answer the questions on the forms, the check will be submitted and we wait for it to process through the Pennsylvania State Police system.

Once the background check has been approved by the Pennsylvania State Police, the transaction can be completed.

I am not a Pennsylvania resident. Can I purchase a firearm at Grice Gun Shop?

Most Long gun transactions may be completed in store for out of state purchasers. The long gun must be legal in your state and adhere to any firearm laws or restrictions.

All out of state sales of handguns, frames, receivers, pistol grip firearms, and other unique firearms are required to be shipped to an FFL holder in your state. These firearms must be legal in your state and adhere to your state’s firearms restrictions and laws. We cannot complete a firearms transaction in our store for these firearm types if you are not a PA resident.

If the firearm is legal in your state we can ship it for you. The cost of shipping will be added to the transaction and you will need to pick up your firearm at your chosen FFL holder and complete the background check there. Please be advised, most FFL holders charge a fee for firearms transfers. You are responsible for knowing and paying any fees that your chosen FFL holder may charge you.

An expired driver's license is acceptable only with duty papers showing where they are currently stationed. If they are stationed in Pennsylvania, active military can purchase a handgun with an out of state driver’s license and corresponding paperwork described above.

What is a “Straw Purchase”?

A straw purchase is an illegal purchase situation where a person has someone else buy a firearm for them with the intention of paying that person back (monetary, trade, other), either before or after the sale. This could be because they cannot pass a background check, live too far, do not have time to come to the store.

There is a 10 year minimum Federal prison sentence for those involved in a straw purchase. It is at the discretion of our salesmen, who are trained to recognize this situation, to determine if a transaction is a straw purchase. If a salesperson is uncomfortable with any transaction they will not complete the purchase, regardless if the customer claims it is or is not a straw purchase. We will make mistakes but we err on the side of extreme caution, as it is our obligation to abide by the laws.

We are not obligated to complete any sale for any reason whatsoever, if we do not see fit, especially straw purchases or other odd circumstances/situations.

How long does a background check take to process through Pennsylvania Instant Check System?

For most customers, the paperwork takes 10 minutes or less to fill out. The actual wait time for the background check to be processed varies and is dependent upon the Pennsylvania Instant Check System run by the Pennsylvania State Police.

Can I fill out the background check paperwork before I come in?

No, background check forms will be provided at the counter and must be fully completed in the store.

You are still responsible for the cost of the background check, $2. You have the option to put the gun on layaway and challenge the denial. We will provide you with a denial challenge form to be completed and mailed to the Pennsylvania State Police within 30 days of the denial. The Pennsylvania State Police will respond to the challenge appeal within 5 business days.

They will provide the reason for denial in writing to the buyer or they may send a reversal letter if an error was made in the denial decision. Layaway cancellation fees will still apply should your challenge appeal request still be denied. If your denial is reversed, the firearms purchase may continue and be completed with copies of the reversal letter. Grice Gun Shop and its employees are never given reason for denied or delayed background checks, so we cannot tell you why you may have received that response from Pennsylvania State Police. We just receive the background check back as denied, approved, or delayed.

What happens if my background check is delayed or placed into research by the Pennsylvania Instant Check System?

If your background check through the Pennsylvania Instant Check System is in delayed status, you may wait hours or days before receiving an answer back.

You will have the option to place the item you want on layaway. Background check fees still apply regardless of the final status of approved, denied, research, etc. We cannot complete the firearms transaction until your background check is returned to us by Pennsylvania State Police with an approved status.

Once we have received an approval, you will be contacted and asked if you still want to complete the firearm transaction. We ask you to return as soon as possible once your check is approved to complete the transaction, as the approval numbers expire 6 days after the day it is approved.

Grice Gun Shop has no control over the length of time a background check takes to process or whether a purchaser is approved, delayed, or denied by Pennsylvania State Police Instant Check System.

What happens if my background check is denied by the Pennsylvania Instant Check System?

If your background check is denied through the Pennsylvania Instant Check System, we are not able to complete any firearms transaction for you.

I just purchased a gun yesterday, do I have to do another background check today?

Yes. Background checks are only valid the day they receive approval through the Pennsylvania Instant Check System.
